Students are faced with many challenges along with the stress that comes from school. Balancing work, family, finances, and unexpected challenges can make college feel more difficult than standard challenges. Sometimes having resources such as reliable internet, help for interviews, and food resources can make focusing on school easier to prioritize. At DACC, AVANZA is somewhere that students can turn to when they are faced with these unexpected challenges. AVANZA Student Success Advocates provide what DACC describes as a “wrap around” support resource, giving students access to many resources that can help them both academically and personally. Advocates at AVANZA work individually with students to understand and help them with their challenges and help connect them with the support they need. AVANZA offers multiple types of support. Through this program, students can find assistance with basic needs such as food, from the food pantry, emergency aid programs, and reliable technology assistance for all students. These services help students who have a lack of access to necessities that may interfere with their education. Support is also extended beyond academics, with also giving students resources in their personal lives. AVANZA offers a DACC Career Closet, located in the Espina Campus in the Equity Space department. This program offers students free professional clothing for events such as job interviews, and any other occasion where students are expected to dress professionally. This is important and useful for students who need access to professional clothing without having to worry about costs. The Equity Space at the Espina Campus is a space where students can study and recharge. This area offers a private study room where students can work individually or in study groups, equipped with computers and whiteboards, making it a comfortable space for students on campus. Also, in the DACC’s Equity Space, is a resource library located in the DASH building, room 98\. This library includes books on topics like navigating college, and other helpful books for starting college. The wellness room, also located in the equity space, is a calm, quiet environment meant to give students and staff an area to step away from all the busyness on campus. This room includes a massage chair, and a quiet space for students to decompress before returning to class and their busy schedules. Students can also meet with an advocate in person or virtually and can also communicate through phone, text or email, making it easier than ever for students to get help. Advocates are available for questions and help regarding trouble with affording food, financial troubles, career resources, and general questions and help.
