Reporting here about an amazing opportunity for STEM students! The New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation (NM AMP) is a program dedicated to investing in the future of STEM students and careers. NM AMP’s goal is to increase the number of students who complete high-quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degrees while helping undergraduate students prepare to enter the STEM workforce and/or continue their education through graduate school. For students currently attending a New Mexico community college and planning to transfer to NMSU, NM AMP is currently offering an opportunity to receive a $400 stipend to help support you during your transition to a four-year university. This stipend is designed to help students focus on their education and educational needs while making the transition from a New Mexico community college to NMSU. **$400 Transfer Stipend** If you are currently studying for a career in STEM and are planning to continue your STEM education at a four-year university, this could be an opportunity worth looking into. In order to be eligible, you must: ● Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident ● Be enrolled as a full-time STEM major at NMSU, taking 12 or more credit hours ● Have a minimum 2.5 GPA ● Have already completed a minimum of six credit hours at a New Mexico community college during the semester immediately before transferring to NMSU The current application opportunity is available until August 26, 2026. Already at a Four-Year University? You Could Earn $1,000 Through STEM PREP! NM AMP also offers the STEM PREP Program for students who are already pursuing a four-year STEM degree. Through STEM PREP, eligible students have the opportunity to earn $1,000 while exploring undergraduate research. The program is designed to help students find a faculty mentor and research project related to their field of study. This gives students an opportunity to build knowledge and confidence in their major while gaining hands-on experience with real-world research skills that can help them build a stronger career in STEM. Through structured workshops, guided exploration, and individualized support, STEM PREP helps students: ● Explore research opportunities within their major ● Learn how to identify meaningful research areas and potential projects ● Build confidence in joining an academic research environment ● Develop professional communication skills when working with faculty and research groups ● Learn how to identify and approach potential research mentors ● Learn how to read and summarize scientific literature ● Prepare for and participate in academic conferences ● Understand the expectations and responsibilities involved in undergraduate research STEM PREP eligibility In order to be eligible, you must: ● Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident ● Be a full-time STEM major at NMSU, taking 12 or more credit hours ● Have a minimum 2.5 GPA ● Be a 2nd-semester freshman or 1st-semester junior ● Most importantly, have a strong interest in conducting research This can be a great opportunity for students who want to gain experience beyond the classroom and start building connections with faculty and researchers in their field. **2026 NM AMP Student Research Conference** NM AMP is also hosting its 2026 NM AMP Student Research Conference on: Date: Friday, October 23, 2026 Location: NMSU Corbett Center Student Union The conference brings together STEM undergraduate students and faculty from across New Mexico, along with high school students and teachers from the New Mexico Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (NM MESA) program and students and staff from the NMSU TRIO Upward Bound program. The conference provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to: ● Present their STEM research through poster presentations ● Give oral research presentations ● Network with other students, faculty, and STEM professionals ● Participate in workshops and panels ● Learn more about undergraduate research ● Explore opportunities to continue developing their STEM careers ● Compete for best presentation awards One of the biggest highlights of the conference is the undergraduate student research presentations. During the poster presentation sessions, students will have the opportunity to present their research findings and compete against other presenters for awards. Presentations are judged by a panel of professionals and faculty members. The conference is also an excellent opportunity to meet faculty, learn more about research opportunities, develop professional connections, and gain experience presenting your work in an academic environment. There will also be workshops relevant to both university and community college students. The New Mexico Engineering and Science Achievement (NM MESA) program will also provide workshops for participating high school students. Whether you're preparing to transfer to NMSU, already pursuing a STEM degree, or interested in getting involved with undergraduate research, NM AMP provides opportunities to help you gain experience, build connections, and prepare for your future STEM career.
